Children's ProgrammingWWPL is proud to offer a wide range of programming for children of all ages including regular programs such as story times, clubs and homeschool classes as well as one-time seasonal programs like the Polar Express Pajama Party and Harry Potter Day. During summer we have a reading program complete with special guests like Jungle Jim and prizes for all levels of readers. A new schedule of programs is released every season. Winter 2012 Program InformationPottery with Jeremy SouthMake and decorate pottery, then pickup after Jeremy fires and returns them to the library. Pre-payment and registration required. Tiny Tots Preschool Pottery Kids Pottery Homeschool ClassesPat Walker Writing Classes Pat Walker has a B.S from Indiana University, an M.S. from Anderson University and is a M.S.D. Lawrence Township retired teacher. Classes January 11 - April 18 (No class March 21). Registration required. Beginner's Writing Cost: $56 (14 weeks) Wednesdays 11 - 11:30 a.m. Grades 1-3. Classroom read-alouds and discussion will help form an idea about the structures that stories generally follow. Each child will use this "story sense" and lessons in the writing process to develop elaborated paragraphs with strong verbs, descriptive adjectives and exact nouns. Creative Writing & Research Cost: $112 (14 weeks) Wednesdays 1 - 2 p.m. Grades 4 and up. We will continue to address the Standards for Writing, Grades 4-8 and focus on expository compositions in preparations for PSAT and other nationally formed writing evaluations. SAT Prep & Creative Writing Cost: $112 (14 weeks) Wednesdays 12 - 1 p.m. Grades 6 and up. This class is for young writers with some experience. Students will continue to develop expository composition and research skills. They will also learn how to properly note sources and how to write SAT essays. Forensic Science Class Cost: $137 (11 weeks) Wednesdays 10:15 - 11:30 a.m. January 11 - March 21. Grades 3 – 6. *Registration and prepayment are required. Join us as we discover the science behind the evidence left behind. We will experiment with many types of evidence from fingerprinting to chromatography to hair samples. We will solve a few mini-crimes along the way, but our focus will be on the scientific experiments relating to evidence. Each week we will examine one or more types of evidence and explore how scientists use laboratory techniques for examining that evidence. Students will have a lab book which the instructor will keep until the final class. Class labs will be based on the Science in a Nutshell curriculum.
Japanese Class Cost: $112 (14 weeks) Wednesdays 1:15 - 2:15 p.m. January 11 - April 18 (No class March 21). Ages 10 and up. *Registration and prepayment are required. Learn the basics of conversational Japanese! Writing lessons will be given in Hiragana and Katakana, along with many of the common Kanji characters. Through immersion, students will engage in conversational Japanese as they learn to communicate with their instructor and other students. The goal of this class will be to introduce students to a self-study method in order to enable them to continue to learn basic Japanese on their own.
